Material changes have to be expected in the overall European development. Given its situation in the centre of Europe, Austria has to cope with ever-increasing traffic. The high importance of traffic safety is also reflected on a European level. Its strong significance is also emphasized by different European initiatives, such as eSafety, which is aimed at the development and application of intelligent integrated safety systems. For starters the necessary data for the analysis of road condition, location and accidents have to be present. The registration of the Austrian road condition data is made by the measurement vehicle RoadSTAR.
The data material collected by RoadSTAR is unique in terms of quality, resolution and area coverage. This data pool enables arsenal research to carry out area-wide considerations of the connection between road condition and accidents. Thus the analysis of the causes of an accident don't have to take into account individual places of accident or places of frequent accidents, but can include the whole network. These huge quantities of data and results are statistically and visually processed.
International efforts are increasingly aimed at traffic safety. Those, who plan and provide the infrastructure, are responsible for the safety of the road users. Within the framework of the RONCALLI project, the Mobility Department pursues the objective to make available exclusively situation data. This data is relevant for traffic safety and to the road user by means of an end device within a freely accessible electronic marketplace.
