In Floating Car Data Systems, data regarding the traffic flow are not collected via fixed measurement points, but the vehicle itself functions as a mobile sensor forwarding position and speed to a central position. These technologies are the basis for intelligent guidance systems, which can optimally control traffic flows of the future by means of simulation and prognosis.
By using innovative models and the simulation of traffic scenarios in real-time, we create the basis of planning, control, and information of traffic and thus provide an improvement of the efficiency of traffic infrastructure facilities.
Research in the field of traffic telematics focuses on new methods to accelerate the collection, processing and communication of data and information and make it more cost-efficient. Here, GPS systems and – as a leader on the European market – methods based on the GSM technologyare used. The scientific focus is put on data fusion. This topic includes on the one hand the methodical connection and processing of data from different sources, such as Floating Car Data or numerical data, but also the systematic integration of different sources as well as the implementation of the fusion product.
