Generators as the most important components of a power station play a key role in securing electrical power supply. Due to increased economic aspects on the one hand and an increased generator stress due to energy market liberalisation on the other hand, the assessment of the generator state rates highly. The development and implementation of online diagnostic methods (e.g.
partial discharge monitoring), which can be performed during operation of the power station, enable the early detection of isolation defects and thus prevent expensive generator breakdowns.
