A Smart Drive requires a compact electric machine with high power density and efficiency, without excessivethermal and magnetic stresses. The design of each each componentis based on modeling and simulation. Corresponding models are being developed in order to analyze the thermal behaviour and eevaluate the losses. Using real-time models, it is possible to operate each subsystem at an optimal point,to achieve optimum energy management for the machine and for the entire system.
Early detection of machine faults is necessary for a high level of fail-safety. The integration of modern monitoring and diagnostic strategies into the Smart Drives enables online-monitoring of the unit during its complete economic life as well as early detection and diagnosis of faults during operation.
